R He is up to date and has everything modern.
“A phonograph, a radio, a car and a Frigidaire”.
This shows that he has all the latest gadgets and that he keeps up with the changing society and is equipped with the skills to operate such electrical appliances.
R He is flexible in his thinking.
“Both Producers Research and High-Grade Living declare he was fully sensible to the advantages of the instalment plan”.
He is able to accept new ideas unlike most people who are usually unreceptive to changes or new plans that might affect their lives in some way or another.
R Supportive of the government.
“ Our researchers in public opinion are content, that he held the proper opinions for the time of the year.”
Shows that he is a compliant citizen and therefore this goes on to be one of the definitions of a modern man according to the passage.
R He did his fair bit of contribution to the society’s population.
“He was married and added five children to the population”.
This shows that he was being a helpful citizen by adding to the population during the period of the war where there was a massive population loss.
R He was a loyal citizen.
“When there was peace, he was for peace; when there was war, he went”
He was very patriotic and abiding. He was always there for his country.
R He was a father that believed in his children.
“And our teachers reported that he never interfered with their (his children’s) education”.
He does not question what educationists do to his children. And it probably shows that he respects the teachers’ doings.

Yes. The title is appropriate because for the fact that such a person does not exist in this world and therefore is unknown to anyone. He probably only exists in our utopia.
The word “saint” is used to describe him. It is a known fact that no one can be a saint and the term that is used on him is exaggerated.
He is also portrayed as an obliging person and one with no desires. This can be seen from “everything he did served the greater community”. This is highly impossible as we all have our selfish desires and we cannot be doing things just for the benefits of other people.
He was a father who did not bother about his children’s education. He “never interfered with their education”. However, which father would not want their children to excel in their studies. Besides, when his children are young, they are not able to make their own decisions. At this point of time, his children need him by their side to help them make decisions. Since he is not around for them, thus it is not true that he is a good father.

After reading this poem, I sympathise with this unknown citizen as he has done so much for the people in his country but he cannot get any recognition for anything he did. Instead if he had rebelled and go against the government, he will actually get more recognition than for what he is doing now.
I also sympathise with the society as it moulds everyone into something that they want for themselves and doesn’t give the people a chance to be what they want to be, not giving them any freedom to choose what they dream of doing.
The poem is also very confusing. At the last part of the poem, the poet wrote “Was he free? Was he happy? The question is absurd: had anything been wrong, we should certainly have heard”. Does this mean that the unknown citizen is just one of the many citizens who do just what the government wants them to do and is actually unknown due to the fact that there are many of this type of character around in the country and not due to the fact that he is too perfect to exist in our world? How can we even stand out of the crowd without rebelling and doing something what a stereo typical citizen would not do and not follow what the government had asked and expects us to do? Is this not the same as going against the government?
I also feel shocked about how a modern man is defined in the passage, as it seems that the person has no freedom of speech of any opinion of his own. Everything he does is for the society for the improvement of it but never for himself. The lack of his own opinions means he accepts almost everything that comes to him and not change it for himself to suit his likes. This makes the individuals of this society to be one that follows and never questions the government. Thus, although the society will improve, but will it not improve into one that the government yearns for and not one that the citizens are comfortable in?
