i) In the passage Siew Eng is unfairly treated by her mother. I think that Siew Eng feels indignant, sad and scared. She feels indignant because of the unfair treatment by her mother. She feels sad because of the unfair treatment she receives from her mother and because of the scolding she receives from her mother. She feels scared because of the scolding from her mother.

I think that Siew Eng feels indignant because of the unfair treatment by her mother. She is shown to be unfairly treated when she “had never been sent to school but had worked at home washing, cleaning and cooking since she was seven.” She is also shown to be unfairly treated when “she served the food, cleaned the kitchen and ate standing up by the wood stove when everyone had finished.” These evidence shows she was treated like a maid. She was made to do a lot of housework and she could not eat with the other members of the family and she had to eat the family’s leftovers. She has to go through all these yet her cousin Mei Sim does not have to. This shows that these things only apply to Siew Eng, so it is considered an unfair treatment.

I think that Siew Eng feels sad because of the unfair treatment and the scolding from her mother. It is shown that Siew Eng feels sad because of the unfair treatment when “her smile is frail” and when “[her cousin] has never heard her cousin laugh” These show that Siew Eng does not laugh because she is sad. It is shown that Siew Eng feels sad when she is scolded by her mother when “[she] hung her head” when her mother scolded her for whispering in her ear and startling her. This shows that she feels sad for being scolded just because she asked an innocent question.

I think that Siew Eng feels scared because of the scolding from her mother. This is shown when Siew Eng “hung her head” as her mother scolded her. Siew Eng shows that she is afraid because she does not dare to face her mother. Another example which shows that she is scared is when “[Siew Eng’s] scrawny chest seemed to shiver under the loose blouse” when her mother scolded her for not serving the food quickly.

In conclusion, I think that Siew Eng feels indignant, scared and unhappy when she is treated unfairly by her mother, who makes her do a lot of chores scolds her when she is not really in the wrong, treats her like a maid, not allowing her to eat with the rest of the family and making her eat the family’s leftovers.

ii) In the story, the writer makes us feel sympathetic for Siew Eng. This is done in a few ways. Firstly, the writer makes use of certain words to describe her and the bad treatment she receives. Secondly, the writer uses dialogue to stress the feelings trying to be expressed by the characters. Last but not least, the writer gives a lot of examples which show that her mother keeps picking on her.

The writer makes use of certain words to describe Siew Eng to make us feel sympathetic for Siew Eng. The writer chooses words like “Sundal” when Siew Eng is talking to her mother, which means illegitimate daughter, to show that Siew Eng is not on good terms with her mother. This makes us feels sympathetic for Siew Eng as it tells us that she is not loved by her mother. The writer also chooses words like “scrawny”, “frail” and “shriveled” to describe Siew Eng. This makes as feel sympathetic for Siew Eng as it tells us that Siew Eng is small in size, possibly because of neglect and abuse.

The writer uses dialogue to stress the feelings trying to be expressed by the characters. For example, when Siew Eng’s mother says “What are you waiting for, you stupid girl? Go serve the rice! We are coming to the table right away. Make sure there are no flies on the food.” It stresses the anger trying to be expressed by Siew Eng’s mother when Siew Eng did not serve the rice quickly. This makes us feel sympathetic because it tells us that Siew Eng’s mother gets angry at Siew Eng over very small things like the serving of rice.

The writer gives a lot of examples which show that Siew Eng’s mother keeps picking on her. The examples include: scolding her because she did not serve the rice quickly, not allowing her to eat with the rest of the family, making here sleep on a camp bed, and many more. These examples make us feel sympathetic for Siew Eng because the frequent examples make us feel that she is treated very badly by her mother everyday.

In conclusion, the writer makes us feel sympathetic for Siew Eng by making use of certain words, by using dialogue to stress feelings trying to be expressed by the characters, by giving a lot of examples which show that Siew Eng’s mother keeps picking on her.
