(: Did anyone miss me whilst i was gone for two and a half days? I bet so! Well, let me recount the hours and days spent at Biopolis! I made new friends, learnt new things and discovered more about the world of science...
Day One:
I met xinjie and james and shazly at Buona Vista MRT. Well, Shazly behaved like a Primary Six kid, and i dont mean the actions literally, i mean the mentality. Basically, i believe they are our future mad scientist, because all i hear them talk about is science team, science quizes, science competitions and discoveries about scientific facts... Maybe an occasional mention about XBOX 360, but that probably adds up to only about 5% of the entire conversation. So we missed the shuttle bus to Biopolis, because they seemingly refuse to communicate with me ( maybe xinjie did try a little ). So even thought i knew that was a Biopolis shuttle (I've seen one) I did'nt bother to inform them... Rah, that was kind of bad of me but oh well, I was'nt exactly in a good mood... So we walked to Biopolis and met a RJ guy who was on the attachment with us too, and he ended up being my bench mate. (LOL) Saw the sculpture made by our school student like 6 years ago outside the MOE building...
True enough, Biopolis was like how Daomin and Noeleen described. It's like a world of it's own, isolated from the surrrounding. The buildings were even given scientific names... Proteos, Genome, Matrix... Lol... We were in the Proteos building, level 3 to be exact... After an arduous morning wait, we got our passes and attended saftey talks and knew bits of history about Biopolis. We were then shown our labs and partners and seats. My partner was Marilyn from NYGH ( and she's a triplet! ) Haha, we clicked off rather well, talking about how terrible geog is, and cca and stuff... Then we went for lunch... Well... lunch with the science guys was not exactly nice... They seem to want nothing but fast food... and they were just DYING like for fast food...
We did protien electrophorosis... Grinding the chicken meat and stuff... We were shown the centrifugal room too. It's super cool. Luckily i wasn't super suaku there, cause we've did like almost the same thing during our DNA workshop at Science Centre... LOL, still i forgot how to use the micropipetter... haha... That's basically all for day 1..
Day Two and Three.
Rah, did not eletrophorosis, transfer the thing, put milk and membrane on the oribital shaker, and wash it with PBST... Blabla, talked more, got to know a VJ girl from our bench... Lol... She's VJIP, so she's sec 4 too, called Marianne, (HAHA ALL THE MARI'S. cuicui must be laughing real hard. lol... ) She's really nice... we talked too, and rahrah, went for lunch, as usual they ran around Holland V for fast food... Came back and did new experiments, on... C. Elegans... WHICH IS JUST A FANCY NAME FOR WORMS LAH, OK, WORMS WORM WORMS. ): I WAS SO TOTALLY FREAKED OUT LAH! AND THE TWO MARI'S WERE JUST REASSURING ME THAT ITS OK ITS MICROSCOPIC AND NOT A PARASITE, AND WE'D BE HANDLING WITH GLOVES, BLABLA, THE INSTRUCTOR WAS TELLING ME ITS OK TOO, BUT ITS STILL WORMS RIGHT. THEY MADE ME LOOK AT WORMS UNDER THE MIRCOSCOPE AND OK THE FIRST ONE WAS OK, BUT THE SECOND ONE WAS HUGE AND IT STARTED WIGGLING, ARUGH, IT SQUIRMED RIGHT UNDER THE MIRCOSCOPE! AH, IT TOTALLY MOVED INFRONT OF ME! SO FREAK OK, I WAS LIKE NO NO I DONT WANT TO SEE ANYMORE. AH. )x
Ok so we did worms for there rest of the day. It was nothing much, just looking at the differente mutated forms of worms... Rah ): Took our group picture at the sky bridge, super cool (: even if we had construction site as our background. Lol... Then we did our group work, presentation on ppt, we're preparing the slides. Man, the RJ and two mari's were so pro at that! They know where to search for relevant info, the ppt short cuts, and stuff. I feel so dumb next to them... considering we always do projects on PAPER. GOSH, so that's how you differentiate good schools and moderate schools, their project doing ability...
Went on a short orientation of Biopolis, went to the underground washing area! Went to the place where they stored other states of CO2... Then i had to come back for art. Rah... So i bade my goodbye and rushed back. Damn, took a cab fm home to sch ok!
The experience at Biopolis was a very enriching one, the experiments and surrounding people made me think deeper and question the procedures, finding out the reasons as to why so for every step. The experience there made me like science! It made me think if i want to become a scientist in future, besides, i get to choose what to work with dont i? I can then choose not to work with C. Elegans! (X ((((:
